Assuming that you are allowed to own ferrets where you live, you should also consider carefully whether owning a ferret is right for you. These little guys can be fun to own, but they present challenges unique to their species and they should not be expected to act like the cats or dogs you may be become accustomed to owning. This is certainly not to put people off of owning ferrets as pets, but there are already too many abandoned ferrets in ferret shelters and ferret rescue facilities as a result of people thinking that ferret adoption would be "fun" without taking into account the work that would be involved.

As this site grows, it will be our goal to find and present everything ferret related that we can think of to help you to learn about ferrets as pets. We recommend that before you buy a ferret, you do some research. Reading websites like this one and others related to owning a ferret is a good start. It would also be wise to get yourself a quality ferret book that serves as a guide to ferret ownership so that you can grab it at any time and look up particular issues quickly, should any arise.

Some topics you should consider as you learn about ferret care are:

• What ferret supplies will you need to purchase?
• The cost and size of ferret cages and the best location for one in your home. (You can find cheap ferret cages if you will consider a used model).
• Ferret food - what will you feed your new pet?
• Ferret odor - although often exaggerated, this can be an issue for some people who are particularly sensitive to odors and who own ferrets that have not been fixed or de-scented.

Some sources say that people have kept pet ferrets for thousands of years.  Domesticated pet ferrets are actually quite common, but they have gotten a bit of a bad reputation.  They are not cats and they are not dogs.  It is not fair really to compare them to either of these animals.  Although they look like rodents to some people, they are not.  They are actually carnivores and are related to animals like weasels, minks, and polecats.  Even writing this makes it sound as though they are wild animals and that just isn't true.  They have been domesticated for many years, and do well as pets for the right owner.

Pet ferrets do not really get a very big.  Females are typically smaller than males and neutered males will usually top out at 4 pounds.  There can be individual differences in the animals, and you may see them bulk up during the colder winter months and begin to thin out once spring arrives.

Some people worry because they have heard that ferrets smell bad.  The family of animals that they belong to all have scent glands in their anus.  This family of animals includes skunks, so you can see where the bad reputation comes from.  Most pet ferrets are de-scented so this really is not an issue.  But even ferrets that still have their scent glands will not smell anywhere near as bad as a skunk.

If you do decide to get a pet ferret, you will learn a couple of things quickly.  Ferrets like to sleep a lot.  Sometimes a pet ferret will sleep 18 to 20 hours each day.  When they are awake however, they can be extraordinarily playful.  A pet ferret will adjust its schedule according to that of its human owner.  You should definitely only consider getting yourself a pet ferret if you have the time and energy to put in to playing with it on a daily basis.  Of course, you may also want to consider getting your pet ferret a friend to keep him company.  Ferrets love to play with each other.  If you want your ferret to be happy, you must be sure that it will have enough exercise and attention to meet its needs.  They will not be happy living a solitary life in a cage without any attention.  They really should have at least a couple hours of play time each day.

Another consideration if you are thinking about getting a pet ferret, is the cost.  Most likely, you are not set up with fdrret pet supplies.  You'll need to get your pet some accessories to meet its basic needs.  Before you ever get your pet ferret, you should make sure that you have purchased all necessary supplies.  You cannot simply put your ferret in a box and walk away.  He will be out before you make it out of the room.  A proper ferret cage should be purchased if you intend to keep a ferret as a pet.  You also should ferret proof your home thoroughly.

If you have ever owned a small puppy, you have gotten a little taste of what an animal can get into if it is curious.  Well, ferrets are very curious.  Ferrets can get into just about anything.  Before you bring your new pet ferret home, you should make sure that he will not be able to get to things like electrical cords or heating ducts.  You may actually want to get down on the ground at ferret level and take a look at things from that point of view.  If it catches your eye, it will catch the ferret's eye too.  It is your responsibility as a ferret owner to ensure your pets safety.  Ferret proofing your house is essential.

I will be writing more about ferret ownership in upcoming posts.  If you're thinking about taking on a pet ferret, just be fair to yourself and the animal.  Realize that owning a ferret can be an adventure.  It is not the same as owning a cat, dog, bird or any other domestic animal that you may have taken as a pet previously.  I'm not saying that it is better or worse, just different.  Do your ferret research, and be sure that a ferret is the right pet for you.  I certainly do not want to discourage anyone from owning a pet ferret.  I just think people should go into it with a full understanding of the commitment they are making, so that we don't end up with even more abandoned

If you do want to buy ferret clothes, you can't exactly to pick them up at most retail stores.  I guess dressing ferrets isn't a big enough market yet for Walmart to consider (at least not where I live).  There are specialty stores willing to fill just about any need though, and ferret clothing is right in the mix.  As I mentioned before, I recommend checking eBay for just about any ferret pet supplies you might be looking for because there is a large variety and the prices are usually pretty good.  Nothing I point you toward has been personally listed by me, so I can't really answer any questions about what is available for sale.  You can ask sellers as many questions as you like though.  My experience has been that eBay sellers are usually very good about responding quickly to questions.

Just checking now, I see that there are quite a lot of ferret clothes for sale including  t-shirts, sweatshirts, harnesses, dresses, vests, sweaters, sweater/hat combos...You get the idea.  Just about everything but shoes, and I might have just missed those since I only was looking at the top of the first page.  Cute stuff if you and your ferret are into that sort of thing.

I want to say that if you are going to buy your ferret clothing, you should consider the comfort of your pet first.  I have never asked a ferret personally about this, but I don't think most ferrets would enjoy wearing a hat for a long period of time.  My personal feeling is that these would be for photo ops and possibly for wearing to special social events and then removing.  If your ferret seems happy in his or her new duds though, go nuts I guess.  Just make sure that you aren't subjecting your ferret to something it doesn't enjoy for extended periods of time  just for the sake of cuteness.  If the ferret is unhappy, it will probably make its feelings known in short order when it starts trying to weasel its way out of the clothing. (pun intended )

If you do like to dress up your ferret, please don't be offended.  I don't dress up my dog either beyond the occasional bandana and tons of people go to the trouble of tying on little dog booties every day.  It's a personal decision for you and your ferret.  If you are looking, I highly recommend seeing what is available on eBay.  They have one of the best selections of ferret clothes that I've run across.  Another reason to check eBay is that you will sometimes find handmade items that you won't find anywhere else.  These items can be pretty interesting and they are definitely unique since they are made by hand by crafty individuals without a retail outlet.

Ferret Pet Supplies are essential if you are considering owning a pet ferret.  Ferret bedding, ferret cages, ferret food...it can be a bit of an expensive initial set up, but these are some of the basics of ferret care.  I will be making at least a couple of posts on the topic of ferret pet supplies.  Before you go past the point of looking for ferrets for sale, make sure that your home is prepared with the ferret accessories and all of the ferret pet supplies you will need to make your ferret's introduction to your home go smoothly.  Use these posts as a primer, but it would be wise to talk to a friend who owns a ferret or a reputable ferret breeder as well.

As far as pets go, it is important to remember that your ferret is not the same as a cat or a dog.  I've heard some ferret owners try to give descriptions of ferrets relative to both of these animals, but ferrets are definitely their own distinct animal.  They have been domesticated for over a thousand years, but they should not be taken on with the expectation of them acting like a dog or a cat. For example, you should never allow your ferret to get outside on its own.  Most people avoid doing this with dogs and cats as well, but they usually end up returning safely when they do get out.  A ferret is just not equipped to handle the wilds of your neighborhood and could end up in a very bad way if he escapes.  This is why ferret proofing your house and providing a safe secure living area (such as a ferret cage) is so important for your ferret's safety.

One of the most important pieces of basic ferret pet supplies will be the ferret cage.  As you would probably expect, you can find a wide range of styles available for your ferret to call home.  Also as you might expect, you can spend quite a bit of money on a cage if you really want to do that.  I would throw in here that you might want to consider finding a second hand cage for sale.  You could do this locally or check a site like eBay.  Even with shipping, you are likely to save some money buying used.  Just make sure that it is clean and sturdy and meets all of your other requirements before you buy it.

Ferrets can sleep a lot.  When they are awake however, they crave exercise and stimulation.  Think of how you feel when you have been cooped up all day inside of your house for one reason or another.  Your ferret needs something to keep its mind sharp and some room to move.  Ideally you will be letting your ferret out to play with you, but you can't walk around holding it during every waking moment.  Your ferret cage should probably be at least 12 cubic feet for one ferret.  That works out to about 3'x2'x2' for non math fans.  Bigger is actually better, but your budget and the amount of space available in your home could be limiting factors.  Look around for what kinds of cages are available and once again, I'll recommend asking ferret owners or ferret breeders in your area for advice.  A breeder might even have a suitable cage around that he or she wishes to sell at a decent used price.

When you decide on a cage for your ferret or ferrets be sure that it is secure so that your pet does not escape and get itself into trouble, or worse.  Check to be sure that your ferret cage has openings that are small enough to prevent escape.  Get something that is built to handle any potential escape artists.  You should be able to securely fasten the door shut.  Also be sure that there are no openings that could trap or injure your pet ferret.  If you end up buying a used ferret cage, you should also give it a very thorough cleaning.  You may never know with absolute certainty what was kept in there before you and your ferret came along.  Better safe than sorry in this case.

As I'm writing this, I'm realizing that several pages could probably be devoted just to cages.  There are many styles that include variations of a very basic ferret cage up through large, multi level outfits built to house multiple ferrets.  You will have to decide what is appropriate for your specific situation.  Before I leave the topic of ferret cages though, I want to mention that you should provide some kind of safe haven in your ferret's cage where he can go to just chill out or sleep.  They like to have some type of cover where they can escape from being in the wide open spaces.  This might be bedding or an actual ferret safe structure that gets put in the ferret cage.  You should also make sure that there is some kind of bottom to your cage other than plain wire.  It is a comfort thing.  Would you want to walk around and sleep on that every day?  Your ferret will use what you put in its cage as bedding, so it will eventually get stinky and/or dirty.  This bedding will need to come out for cleaning from time to time.  If you are going to take a ferret as a pet, you owe it to the ferret to provide decent living conditions.

From experience, I recommend checking eBay for ferret supplies.  You will usually find both new and used ferret related items listed.

Basic Ferret Info

If you are just now considering getting yourself a ferret as a pet, you should make sure that you are prepared to take on the commitment of an animal that requires your attention on a daily basis.  In order to properly care for ferrets, you must be willing to devote some of your time and possibly adjust your lifestyle a bit.  If you think you are just drawn to the novelty of having a ferret, you might want to think things through a bit.  Taking on a pet ferret as a new member of the family can have great rewards and provide hours of entertainment, but if your new ferret is sentenced to being stuck in a ferret cage 24/7 without any interaction beyond being fed, it will not be happy.  Actually this applies to any pet you may take into your home (although you probably shouldn't take fish out to play).

Ferrets enjoy contact with their human owners and long to interact and play.  The last thing I want to do is discourage someone from owning one of these fun little furballs IF they are prepared for it.  There are too many abandoned and discarded ferrets around though.  Fortunately, there are kind hearted souls who look for ferrets for adoption, but they can't take in all of the unwanted pets.  In the interest of happy owners and happy ferrets, lets get some unpleasant details out of the way from the get go so that future ferret rescue situations can be avoided.   Here are a few ferret care points to consider before getting yourself a new ferret pet:

*  Are you are a workaholic or do you just have such a busy lifestyle that you can't spare time each day to spend with your ferret?  Ferrets require time.  Various books I've read recommend up to two hours per day.  That is more than some people spend with their children.  A possible work-around for this is getting your ferret a playmate, but then that actually could increase your responsibilities.  Consider this carefully.
Small children shouldn't be left in charge of a pet ferret.  They can help with ferret care, but should not be left totally in charge.  Besides, sharing the work of ferret care is a great chance to bond with kids and teach them about responsibility.  If you are buying a ferret for your little one, be sure that you realize that YOU should be the primary caretaker even if the child has good intentions.  This is also a safety consideration for both your child and the ferret.
*  Ferrets can produce some unpleasant odors.  Descented ferrets will not be all that bad, and the smell goes away (it isn't like a skunk), but if you are extremely sensitive, take this into consideration.  Many ferrets are "fixed" and descented which can help out a lot.  Personally, I've had dogs that could clear a room if they ate something that didn't agree with them and I'd never get rid of them for it.  I just thought it should be mentioned.
*  Ferrets can be high maintenance and rather expensive to take to the veterinarian.  As with any pet, you will have to have regularly scheduled visits to the vet.  Ferrets also have their own issues that come with being a ferret.  These visits can get expensive.  Also, not all veterinarians will treat ferrets or other small animals.  In my area, there is only one vet clinic within thirty miles or so that treats small or "exotic" pets.  Take a few minutes to find a vet in your area who deals with these lovable little guys.  Call them and ask them to tell you what THEY think is important when considering owning a ferret.  They know the common problems and expenses better than anyone.  Also make sure that they will take on new patients if you should decide to go through with your ferret purchase.  You will become attached to your ferret and want to provide proper ferret care.  Be sure that it is available to you and your new pet before it becomes an issue.

If you are researching ferret ownership, one topic you will see mentioned over and over is the legality of it.  Depending on what part of the United States (no pet ferrets allowed in California, sorry) or the world you live in, there may be laws forbidding you from owning a ferret as a pet or restrictions on owning a ferret with which you must comply to keep things legal.  Check your local laws and ordinances before you ever bring your new ferret home.

Ferret Proofing Your Home

If you have ever had a small child in your home or owned a puppy, you understand that sometimes you have to protect these new additions to the family from themselves.  Ferrets like to sleep a lot, but when they are active, they can be very active.  Part of basic ferret care is ferret proofing your home before the critter ever enters it.  As challenging as "proofing" can be for puppies and children, you must be even more diligent when dealing with a ferret.  They can fit just about anywhere they can squeeze their narrow heads into and they are naturally curious and playful.  Fun traits when it's playtime, but downright dangerous if there is an unauthorized ferret escape.  This is a very important part of ferret care that must be addressed to avoid ferret injuries.

Many of the same common "proofing" procedures apply to ferret care as they do with children or puppies, but there are also some other dangers you might not have considered.  Of course you should make sure that your ferret cannot reach any electrical cords.  I once had a lab puppy that I was convinced had a guardian angel.  I still don't know how she reached them, but she got to two electrical cords.  One behind a stove and the other behind the refrigerator.  She was none the worse for wear, but I almost got a good zap as I tried to unplug what remained from the wall!  Ferrets are kind of like that, but smaller and able to fit themselves into even more dangerous situations.

Proper ferret proofing and ferret care also means looking around for any potential escape routes.  These might include passageways like heating vents or any windows or doors that are left open.  I've heard horror stories of cats taking a nap in a dryer only to get tumbled to death.  It may be only an urban legend, but I would consider this a definite danger for ferrets as well.  There are many other ferret proofing steps to consider, but I believe I'll make that another post.  This post is just an introduction to important ferret info.  More ferret care tips will follow.

As I look back over this post, it occurs to me that it sounds like I'm trying to scare off potential ferret owners.  That isn't the case at all.  Since the 1980's, ferrets have become an incredibly popular pet for good reason.  Research seems to indicate that ferrets have been domesticated by man for thousands of year.  It is just extremely important that new ferret owners realize the commitment they are making when they adopt their new ferret pet.  I believe the average lifespan for ferrets is around seven to nine years (ask the vet when you call).  That means that ownership of a ferret should not be taken lightly.  Your ferret care "contract" could run for several years.
