One of the most important purchases you will make as you prepare to bring home your pet ferret (or ferrets) is a ferret cage.  This is a necessity and you really should not cheap out on this.  To keep your ferret safe you will need a cage that is sturdy and that is able to be kept closed until YOU are ready to open it.  Your ferret is going to be curious and many ferrets have quite a natural ability to be escape artists.  You do not want to find out after it is too late that the cage you purchased is not secure.  Ferrets that escape and make it outdoors are in a very dangerous place and they are not equipped to protect themselves from the dangers of roaming cats and dogs, let alone vehicles.  If you are going to take a ferret as a pet, consider the purchase of a good cage part of your basic "ferret proofing" of your home.

The type of cage you decide to purchase is up to you.  You should provide plenty of space for your pet to move around and if you have more than one ferret, you will have to take this into account.  Realize that the cage is going to take up some room and account for it during the set up of your ferret's living area.  It is not fair to the animal to shove it into a garage or laundry room where it will only be seen when you feed it.  You should do your best to integrate your new pet into your life.  This will also help to avoid the cage stress that can sometimes occur when a pet ferret is simply tossed into a cage and neglected (this should never happen).

Cage styles can get quite interesting.  There are single level homes as well as multi levels that help to maximize vertical space in your ferret's "house."  Check for what the ferret cage is made from, as you don't want anything that a ferret can chew through (this means that you cannot keep it in a cardboard box).  Your ferret will want to be able to see you and other family members, so make sure that wherever you place the cage has a view of your home that includes at least occasional human contact.
